Derek Jeter 3,000th hit by martelis

In front of a home crowd of 48,000, New York Yankees short stop Derek Jeter nailed a third inning curveball for a home run, making him the first Yankee in team history to reach the 3,000 career hit milestone. At 37 years old and 13 days, Jeter is 28th player in major league history with 3,000 hits and the fourth youngest player to reach the 3,000 mark. In true legendary fashion, Jeter ended the day going a perfect 5 for 5, including a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth, leading the New York Yankees to a 5-4 win over the Tampa Bay Rays at a sun-splashed and soldout Yankee Stadium. Legendary owner of New York Yankees, George Steinbrenner died Tuesday morning at the age of 80. He had just celebrated his 80th birthday on July 4th. In his 37 years as owner, Steinbrenner took the underachieving Yankees and transformed them into a billion-dollar sports empire, winning 7 World Series titles, 11 American League pennants and 16 AL East titles.

After a nine-year drought, the New York Yankees are once again champions of the baseball world after defeating the Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 in Game 6 of the World Series, giving the Yankees a grand total of 27 World Series Titles. Hideki Matsui took home World Series MVP honors after driving in a record-tying six runs in the Series clincher and finishing the Series with a hitting percentage of .615, slugging percentage of 1.385 while piling up 18 total bases.

On the eighth anniversary of 9/11 during a cold and dreary Friday night at Yankee Stadium, rain-drenched fans witnessed history, as New York Yankees’ shortstop, Derek Jeter, connected with an opposite-field single in the third inning giving him his record breaking 2,772nd hit of his career with the Yankees, one more than Lou Gehrig. Gehrig held the record for more than seven decades. Jeter’s historic feat came in a losing effort to the Baltimore Orioles, 10-4.
