Auburn’s star quarterback Cam Newton won the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night, beating out Stanford’s Andrew Luck and two others by a substantial margin. Newton is only the third player from Auburn to win college football’s top individual honor. He received 729 first-place votes and outpointed runner-up Andrew Luck of Stanford by 1,184 points.
The Georgia native ran for an SEC-best 1,409 yards rushing with 21 touchdowns, and 2,589 yards passing and 28 TD passes. He’s the first SEC player to run for at least 1,000 yards and pass for at least 2,000 in the same season.

Auburn star Cam Newton scored the proverbial hat trick at the 2010 NCAA College Football Awards on Thursday night, walking away with the Davey O’Brien Award as the nation’s top quarterback, the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Award as the best all-around player in the country. His next stop will be New York, where he’s the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy on Saturday.
The 6-foot-6, 250-pound quarterback led top-ranked, undefeated Auburn to the Southeastern Conference championship and a spot in the Bowl Championship Series national title game against No. 2 Oregon on Jan. 10 in Glendale, Ariz.
