The silent French romantic-comedy-drama The Artist triumphed at the 84th Annual Academy Awards, winning in 5 categories including best picture, best director and best actor for Jean Dujardin. The film also won the Oscars for best original score and best costumes. 1929 was the last year that a silent movie won an Oscar. Martin Scorsese‘s Hugo also won five Oscars, mainly in technical categories, while Meryl Streep won best actress for her portrayal of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady – her 17th Oscar nomination and third Oscar win.
