Winter weather is often unforgiving to even the healthiest of hair. But, adjusting a few practices in your daily hair care regimen can really make a difference and keep your hair looking great on the coldest of winter days. Check out my favorite winter hair care tips below!

1. WASH SMART!
You should be careful not to over wash your locks as doing so strips your hair of its natural oils that protect it and keep it healthy. Most stylists recommend washing your hair every other or every two days. In the meantime if you need to freshen up your do, try some dry shampoo (I personally love Oscar Blandi’s line.) And, when you do wash, do so with warm or cool water to best lock in moisture. Finally, it is always good practice to use a wide tooth comb when you first get out of the shower to avoid tearing your hair.

Rub leave-in conditioner

2. CONDITION!
A good hair masque, deep conditioner or hot oil treatment is a great addition to your routine on a weekly basis. In general, the bottles indicate whether they are best for fine, thick or coarse hair, but it is a good idea to consult with your hair stylist about which one might work for you. If you are prone to greasy roots only condition from your ears down, making sure to give your ends a good coating. Also, I highly recommend using a leave-in conditioner on a daily basis when you first step out of the shower. It will help prevent tangles and lock in extra moisture during your drying process.

Point your blowdryer downward

3. PROTECT!
Common sense really plays a huge role in this tip, especially during the winter months. First off, you should never go outside in the cold with your locks wet. It will do more than send a shiver up your back…it will cause your locks to freeze and break. That being said, using a blow dryer or iron on your hair everyday isn’t great either. After showering try to gently remove most of the excess water with a towel. Then, when you’re ready to blow dry, use a nozzle and point it downward on the hair shaft starting at the root (My hair stylist taught me this little trick). Doing so moves the heat with the hair and avoids splitting or breaking the follicle. After it’s all dried, pop on a winter hat and go…just make sure your hat is not too snug as reducing circulation to your scalp can be equally damaging!

I hope these tips help you weatherproof your hair this winter! Check back next week for more beauty tips from me!
